Line of Sight in Term of Relationship

In MW transmission system, the first step before deciding what equipments and antennas type&height to be used is choosing the right location. To decide which is the right location, a survey must be conducted. Technical site survey (TSS) would be the last after pre-survey and Line of Sight (LoS) survey.

For those who've experienced up and down relationship, I guess u should take some time to contemplate.

1. Pre-Survey
Have u done pre-survey....??? Pre-survey is needed to ensure that we are moving toward the right direction. Can u imagine what will happen if I put one Repeater site on top of Mountain without having pre-survey? I will be f**ked up if there are no road and no electricity in top of mountain, and therefore the site can't be built there. Instead of having number of links reduced, indeed I cause the company more trouble. Works are delayed, penalties are given and costumer refuses to revise the BoQ, thus company are forced to pay for more links. Guess what...?? I'm the one to blame since I make planning for nominal network without a proper pre-survey.

2. Line of Sight
What if the links mean if that two sites which are connected each other cannot exchange the traffic. As u may know that for one link to work, a certain area in the air along the path is need to be clear of any obstruction. That what we call 100% Fresnel zone are clear at typical K=1.33 and 60% clear at minimum K. Yes some time at certain case in which we have some limitation, we often sacrifice by having some obstruction in Fresnel zone as long as the signal still can be transmitted and received at acceptable level. Giving too much obstruction (or no LoS at all) will cause signal level low or none at all.

Thus LoS survey need to be done to decide whether the location that choose at pre-survey are correct. LoS survey also will give feedback on what is the height of antenna to be installed in each site. Based on this LoS survey report, than we make a network planning on what equipment, how big the size of antenna, how strong the signal and etc.

3. Technical Site Survey
Basically after LoS survey done, transmission are almost done. TSS to be done just to make sure that site location is the same (or close to) location as we've chosee in LoS survey. Other activities such as legality of land, leasing price and etc are to ensure that the location are good for acquisition and losing the site will have bad impact on network.
Have u done those three step when u make "a serious relationship"?
If u still have problem maybe u can solve by these;

  • Try search within a short hop/links, maybe ur signal is being ducted
  • Add a Space Diversity antenna to catch the multipath signals from the man/woman of your dream
  • Try use additional repeater(s) if u r in long distance relationship (not recomended :P)

I do believe that if u've done a proper pre-survey and have clear Line of Sight, someone ur dream of will come straight to u. It's up to u to proceed to TSS then.

Cheers....!!!
